Although the inhabitants of Madrenice are accustomed to seeing clockwork automata roaming the island and assisting various middle- and upper-class citizens throughout the day, a few proud and daring scientists have begun a secret research project known as "F.A.T.E" - Futuristic Automata Technology Exploration. They have started combining the already functional designs of the clockwork automata with some of the advanced cyber-technology of Madrenice's engineering groups to create what is known as a "cybermata", a futuristic version of the clockwork automata.
Still in early prototypes, the cybermata are meant to function as beings with a higher purpose than assisting the general public or being butlers for wealthy families. The researchers working on F.A.T.E hope to incorporate these cyber-tech beings into everyday society, where they will be capable of speech, social interaction, and the full cognitive ability comparative to that of humans. For now, however, the F.A.T.E research project is kept under wraps and hidden from the public. Subsequently, the researchers on this project are completely unaware that some of the clockwork automata of Madrenice are already self-aware, and do not realize that building more artificial intelligence robots purposefully could potentially lead to a social rebellion.
Many of the cybermata consider themselves better than the clockwork automata due to their "newer models", but not all of them have this opinion. While some of the automata are mature and self-righteous, some are curious about the world around them and the inhabitants of Madrenice and act much like little children would.
